In the north, the mountain range is dominated by the Pitons du Carbet (1,207 m) and Mont Pelée (1,397 m), an active volcano that is one of the most highly monitored volcanoes in the world. On the rest of the island, small mountains known as “mornes” rise up to 505 m (Mount Vauclin), with the Lamentin plain at the centre.*
